Emma NextGen Premium mattress composition

The Emma NextGen Premium mattress is the new and improved version of the Emma Premium.

This version is more sustainable, featuring recycled steel pocket springs, 79% less foam, and with a CO2 footprint that's 58% smaller than the original Emma Premium. ♻️

It is a hybrid mattress with 5 layers.

emma nextgen premium composition
The NextGen Premium features a standard or cooling cover, 3 foam layers, individually moving pocket springs, and a durable polyester base.

From top to bottom, let's take a closer look at each of these layers and the role they play. 🕵️

We'll discuss the Emma NextGen Premium mattress cover after we learn more about these core layers.

1. Emma NextGen Premium mattress Halo memory foam

The top layer of Halo memory foam layer offers pressure-relieving support.

The Halo memory foam layer adapts to your movements and hugs the shape of your body.

2. Emma NextGen Premium mattress Point Elastic Airgocell® foam

The second layer is Point Elastic Airgocell® foam.

This foam increases the breathability and temperature regulation of the Emma NextGen Premium. 🌬️

It absorbs sweat, helping you stay cool and dry for a better night's sleep.

3. Emma NextGen Premium mattress supportive foam

As the name suggests, the third foam layer is designed to provide extra support to the top foams.

It enhances spinal alignment without putting stress on pressure points. 🩻

4. Emma NextGen Premium mattress pocket spring core

The thickest layer of the mattress is the pocket spring core.

The individually wrapped pocket springs can move independently, offering enhanced pressure relief and excellent support. 😀

These tall pocket springs promote increased airflow throughout the mattress for improved breathability and optimal temperature regulation.

The pocket spring layer consists of 7 support zones for the head, shoulders, chest, lower back, hips, thighs, and feet.

Each zone offers varying levels of support for the different parts of your body. 💪

Having variable support like this can help keep the spine aligned by, for instance, allowing the hips and shoulders of side sleepers to sink in further than the waist or lower back area.

5. Emma NextGen Premium mattress polyester layer

Underneath the pocket springs sits a layer of polyester.

While this layer doesn't particularly affect how the mattress feels, it helps enhance stability and durability.

6. Emma NextGen Premium mattress cover

The Emma NextGen Premium mattress comes with a choice of a standard or cooling cover. 🤔

The covers are fitted with a zip, making them easy to remove and wash.

But which should you pick?

Standard mattress cover

The standard Ultradry Emma NextGen Premium mattress cover is hypoallergenic, breathable, and washing machine-friendly. 🧼

Cooling mattress cover

The cooling mattress cover is designed to offer better temperature-regulating properties.

Treated with a cooling treatment, it aims to prevent overheating.

How does the Emma NextGen Premium differ from the Emma Premium mattress?

As the name suggests, the Emma NextGen Premium mattress is the newest version of the Emma Premium mattress.

Check out our Emma Premium mattress review to learn more about the mattress that came before the NextGen Premium.

The original Emma Premium was discontinued in September 2023. ⛔

Overall, the Emma NextGen is very similar to its predecessor.

Both the original and next-generation Emma Premium mattresses have a medium-firm feel.

Different degrees of comfort
The Emma NextGen Premium strikes a Goldilocks level of comfort, neither soft nor hard.

These two mattresses are also similarly priced, sitting towards the more expensive Emma mattress range. 💰

However, the NextGen Premium introduces a few enhancements.

One of the most significant is the spring system upgrade.

The NextGen features taller pocket springs than the older model, improving airflow and breathability for a cooler sleep experience. 🛌

The mixed foam layers have also been fine-tuned for better body adaptability and pressure relief.

Additionally, the new model comes with a choice of standard or cooling covers catering to different comfort needs. 🌙

How firm is the Emma NextGen Premium mattress?

The Emma NextGen Premium mattress is a medium-firm mattress.

Our tester measured it as a 6.5 out of 10, where 1 is the softest and 10 is the firmest. 📏

emma nextgen premium mattress firmness

This is similar to the original Emma Premium, another medium-firm mattress, which sat at around a 7 out of 10 on the mattress firmness scale.

Who is best suited to the medium-firm Emma NextGen Premium mattress?

The medium-firm Emma NextGen Premium mattress is very versatile. 🌟

It's designed to comfortably accommodate various sleeping positions, making it comfortable for almost everyone, including:

However, it's worth noting that mattresses will feel firmer to lighter individuals since they tend to experience less sinkage than heavier people. 🛌

Emma NextGen Premium edge support

Unfortunately, the Emma NextGen Premium mattress has poor edge support.

The tall springs go right to the edges of the mattress, and when pressure is applied, the springs sink around 3 to 4 cm (1.2 to 1.6 inches) before holding fast. 🌀

If you have mobility difficulties or frequently sit or roll to the edge of the bed, the Emma NextGen Premium may not be the right choice for you. 🙅

Instead, you may prefer something with excellent edge support, like the Emma Luxe Cooling mattress.

Emma NextGen Premium sinkage depths

While the edges of the Emma NextGen mattress offer minimal support, the rest of the mattress is supportive enough.

It is suitable for all sleeping positions and promotes optimal spinal alignment.

Optimal spinal alignment
The Emma NextGen Premium mattress strikes the perfect balance between support and sinkage, promoting ideal spinal alignment.

The Emma NextGen Premium is soft enough and allows enough sinkage for those of light to average weight. 🤗

However, heavier people, especially stomach sleepers, may find they sink in a little too far.

Our test sleepers, who were of average weight, between 55 kg (121 lbs) and 95 kg (209 lbs), recorded a maximum sinkage of 3 cm (1.2 inches) on their sides, 1 cm (0.4 inches) on their backs, and 0.5 cm (0.2 inches) on their stomachs.

How comfortable is the Emma NextGen Premium mattress?

We found the Emma NextGen Premium mattress very comfortable.

It provided a supportive yet cosy sleeping experience, allowing our test sleeper to wake up without any aches or pains. 🎉

What does the Emma NextGen Premium mattress feel like?

This medium-firm mattress strikes a perfect balance for many sleepers.

It prevents the 'trapped' feeling often associated with foam mattresses, adding a bit of bounce for a springier feel.

Unfortunately, the mattress we received had a manufacturing fault, resulting in an indent where the foams hadn't fully expanded. 😞

Dent in Emma NextGen Premium foams
The foam in the centre of our Emma NextGen Premium mattress never fully expanded as it should have.

The indented foams created some discomfort as we could feel the springs poking through the foams.

Excluding this fault, the mattress has a soft and cradling feel without leaving you to completely sink through. 🌤️

The mattress is strategically designed with 7 support zones, enhancing comfort by maintaining spinal alignment for a pain-free morning.

While it is designed to sleep cooler, our tester observed it wasn't the most breathable option available.

We'll delve into this in more detail in the next section on the Emma NextGen Premium's temperature. 👇

For the best night's sleep, we suggest choosing your sleep accessories carefully to make the Emma NextGen Premium (or whichever mattress you have) even more comfortable.

Does the Emma NextGen Premium mattress sleep hot?

The Emma NextGen Premium mattress is engineered for a cooler sleep experience.

Its hybrid design combines tall pocket springs, breathable Airocell foam, and a moisture-wicking cover. 🌬️

These elements enhance airflow and ensure sleepers stay dry, cool, and comfortable throughout the night.

As a hybrid mattress, the NextGen Premium sleeps cooler than memory foam mattresses.

Having said that, during our Emma NextGen Premium review, our test sleeper noted that breathability wasn’t as good as expected. 🛌

This is partly because the top foam layers, which enhance comfort and pressure relief, retain more heat than a pocket-sprung mattress.

Sleeping temperature
Finding a mattress that suits your temperature needs is crucial for getting a great night's sleep.

So, it’s not the best choice if you are particularly heat-sensitive. 🌡️

Overheating can disrupt your sleep [1], so hot sleepers would be better suited to a cooling mattress, which focuses on optimising temperature regulation.

Our favourite cooling mattresses:

Is the Emma NextGen Premium mattress good for couples?

The Emma NextGen Premium mattress is a great choice for couples.

It offers excellent motion isolation, much like the previous Emma Premium, meaning movement on one part of the bed won’t travel to another. 🛌

The Emma NextGen foam layers effectively absorb movement, ensuring a peaceful sleep even when your partner moves around.

Benefits of low motion transfer
Mattresses with low-motion transfer can prevent you from feeling your partner's movements and even reduce tossing and turning.

With foam layers that successfully minimise the bouncy nature of the pocket spring core, it is ideal for couples, especially those with different sleeping patterns or habits. 👩‍❤️‍👨

How tall is the Emma NextGen Premium mattress?

The Emma NextGen Premium mattress is 25 cm (9.8 inches) tall. 📏

Unfortunately, our Emma NextGen Premium mattress was faulty and only expanded to a maximum height of 21 cm (8.3 inches).

On the bright side, the Emma Sleep customer service team was very helpful, responding quickly and offering to deliver a brand-new mattress.

Important note: An Emma mattress is only considered faulty if the difference between your mattress and the standard measurements is more than 2 cm (0.8 inches). So, an Emma NextGen Premium that expanded to a height of 23 cm (9.1 inches) would not be considered faulty.

Emma does not offer a free replacement for non-faulty mattresses. 🙅

Person measuring mattress indentation
You should measure your Emma mattress after allowing at least 6 hours for expansion.

We recommend measuring your mattress if you decide to order from Emma, as we've recently had some issues with Emma mattresses not expanding fully.

Emma NextGen Premium mattress price

The Emma NextGen Premium mattress sits on the higher end of Emma's pricing scale, though it's not the most expensive. 🏷️

Price-performance ratio
While conducting our Emma NextGen Premium review and test, our sleeper noted that it felt a little cheap for the (original) price.

While comfortable, our tester felt the mattress's quality didn't justify its cost.

The silver lining is that you can snag the NextGen at a much better price with Emma’s frequent mattress deals.

Emma NextGen Premium mattress delivery

You should be able to get the Emma NextGen Premium mattress delivered within 1 to 3 days.

Standard delivery from Emma is to the front door only.

Two-man delivery service
For delivery to your room of choice, you'll need to pay more.

If you pay an additional fee for the premium delivery service, your mattress will be delivered to your chosen room on a specific date, and you'll have the option of having your old mattress removed.

Unfortunately, Emma has recently been facing several delivery issues. 🚚

There has been a growing number of 1-star Emma mattress reviews on Trustpilot because of these delivery problems.

Recent complaints have commented on rude delivery drivers, items not arriving on time (or at all), poor communication, and products being delivered damaged.

We experienced some of these issues first-hand when our Emma NextGen Premium mattress was delivered. 😠

The delivery driver was rude, and we suspect the mattress had been left in the rain as we found water-stained paper under the cover and rust on the fabric pockets of the springs.

None of this is ideal!

However, the Emma customer support team has been incredibly helpful, and we have it on good authority that Emma is working tirelessly to resolve these delivery problems.

Hopefully, Emma's delivery services will be back to their normal smooth sailing soon! ⛵

If you experience any difficulties, contact Emma's customer service team and they will help you.

Unboxing the Emma NextGen Premium mattress

The Emma NextGen Premium arrives conveniently rolled, vacuum-packed, and boxed. 📦

Emma NextGen Premium in box
While still heavy, it was slightly easier to manoeuvre the mattress in the box.

Be aware that the Emma NextGen Premium is heavy, tipping the scales between 19.5 kg (43 lbs) and 41 kg (90.4 lbs).

Getting it upstairs can be challenging, so we recommend enlisting a helping hand. 💪

Once it's upstairs, you can get to unboxing!

  1. Open the box and slide the mattress onto your bed frame. This may require two people as the next-generation Emma Premium is quite heavy.

  2. Position the mattress on your frame and carefully cut the outer plastic wrapping without damaging the mattress.

  3. Unfold the mattress so it lies correctly on your bed frame.

  4. Remove the remaining packaging to let the mattress start expanding.

Once the vacuum seal is broken, your mattress will begin to inflate.

The mattress should expand to its full size within 6 hours. ⏳

Should you buy the Emma NextGen Premium mattress?

While we like the Emma NextGen Premium, we warn you to be aware of Emma's recent delivery challenges. 🚚

The mattress is a very comfortable medium-firm that caters to various sleeping preferences (ideal if you often swap between sleeping positions).

We found the NextGen model supportive, pressure-relieving, and more breathable than the original Emma Premium.

If you're interested in the Emma NextGen Premium, you should know that the 200-night trial allows you to test the mattress extensively and return it for a full refund if it doesn't meet your expectations. 🌙

Frequently asked questions

  • Is the Emma NextGen Premium Mattress suitable for side sleepers?

Designed as a medium-firm mattress, the Emma NextGen Premium is well-suited for side sleepers.

It features specialised zoning for pressure relief in crucial areas like shoulders and hips, providing adequate cushioning at pressure points while maintaining spinal alignment.

However, those who are very light may find it feels a little firm and prefer a softer mattress for side sleeping.

Overall, the NextGen mattress is similarly suitable for side sleeping as its predecessor, as seen in our original Emma Premium review.

  • Can the Emma NextGen Premium mattress be used on any bed frame?

The Emma NextGen Premium mattress can be used on any bed frame.

To avoid potentially damaging the mattress, you should place the mattress on a bed frame with an even surface and equally spaced slats.

Bed slats should have spaces of no more than 7.5 cm (3 inches) between them.

Bed frames with slats can also help improve airflow and breathability.

  • Has the Emma NextGen Premium mattress been discontinued?

Unfortunately, the Emma Premium mattress was discontinued in September 2023.

The good news is that Emma has since released an updated and improved version of this mattress called the Emma NextGen Premium mattress.

You can read more about the discontinued product in our Emma Mattress Premium review.

Alternatively, find out all about the new kid on the block in our Emma NextGen Premium review.

  • Is the Emma NextGen Premium mattress good for back pain?

The Emma NextGen Premium mattress should help with back pain.

The 7-zone pocket spring core adapts to the exact shape of your body, ensuring excellent support.

While the mattress's core works to support optimal spine alignment, the pressure-relieving foams keep you comfortable.

Of course, this may not be the case for everyone.

Some people, especially those who are lighter, may find the Emma NextGen Premium too firm.

If your body cannot sink into the mattress as needed, it will add pressure to these parts of the body, potentially aggravating back and hip pain.
